Ling's Approach

Developing new ways of responding to life’s challenges

Ling's Approach

Ling believes that lasting change comes not only from managing symptoms, but from understanding the experiences that have shaped us and developing new ways of responding to life's challenges.

EMDR therapy

Ling is trained in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) and has a particular interest in working with trauma and distressing life experiences.

EMDR

(Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing)

EMDR is an evidence-based therapy that helps people heal from trauma, anxiety and other difficult experiences by supporting the brain to process memories in a healthier way.

Sometimes distressing experiences remain “stuck” and continue to influence how we see ourselves, relate to others and respond to situations in the present. EMDR helps the brain reprocess these memories so they become less emotionally overwhelming and no longer have the same impact on daily life.

EMDR is recognised by World Health Organisation, and the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies, the Australian Psychological Society and Medicare as an evidence-based treatment for trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and is supported by a growing body of research.

Understanding the impact of early experiences

Alongside EMDR, Ling’s work is strongly influenced by a Psychodynamic approach.

This approach recognises that our early relationships and life experiences often shape how we view ourselves, relate to others and navigate the world around us.

Psychodynamic
Therapy

By exploring recurring patterns, emotional responses and relationship experiences, therapy can help uncover underlying issues that may be contributing to current difficulties. Greater insight often creates opportunities for healing, growth and lasting change.

Ling also draws on Schema Therapy, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Interpersonal Psychotherapy and Mindfulness-based approaches.

Rather than applying a single approach to every client, she tailors therapy to each person’s individual needs, circumstances and goals. Her aim is to provide a thoughtful, supportive and collaborative therapeutic experience that helps clients gain insight, build resilience and create meaningful change.

She believes that a strong therapeutic relationship is central to the process of healing and growth.

The therapeutic relationship

Research consistently shows that the quality of the relationship between a client and therapist is one of the most important factors in successful therapy. Feeling safe, understood and respected creates the foundation for meaningful change.

Ling aims to provide a warm, supportive and non-judgmental environment where clients feel comfortable exploring their thoughts, feelings and experiences. Therapy is a collaborative process, and Ling works alongside each client with curiosity, compassion and respect for their individual journey.

Building trust takes time, particularly when discussing difficult experiences or longstanding patterns.

Ling’s goal is to create a space where you feel heard and accepted, allowing you to explore challenges at a pace that feels right for you.

Whether we are working with current difficulties, the impact of past experiences, or patterns that have developed over many years, the therapeutic relationship provides a foundation for insight, healing and lasting change.
